The sidekick in the current WIP is also a mentor, and a potentially untrustworthy companion.
I like to do a beatsheet for each major character, just so I know their motivations and values - then when putting the story together, it's easier to see where to create conflict that demonstrates (maybe) theme or similar.
We'll see.
Good advice, though; don't have a character in the story who doesn't do something to demonstrate the shape and character of the main POV character - got to be relevant to stay.
