Is it story that makes us read?

Do you see it the same way as the article? I laughed at some, agreed with others (HP ending), and will contemplate a few.

Initially. Yes. Mostly.

Great story, great characters, and well written. Essential elements, all three, IMHO.

Leave one out and it's a flop.

I do think the character comes first though. A great character on a journey that's meaningful to him/her with an undercurrent of fear (stakes and consequences).
Well-written will certainly help get a great story read.
A character in conflict who struggles towards resolution of a problem. I want to feel that in a story.
Which means a good story has an interesting character, a perceived plot/journey/change, and comes in readable language.
Unless ...
