 Sounds familiar, indeed - except for two things:

1. I never learned much English in high school. Or rather, I learned the assigned reading by rote, and learned the assigned English Lit by rote. I never understood it until - luckily, in the same year - I picked up some books of literary criticism, and actually understood what King Lear was about, and how to get an A+ in my Eng Lit exams.

2. I didn't take Lit subjects in uni. I was pressured by parents to take Business instead.

But I never let that stand in the way of writing! :D And so I scribble-scribble-scribbled my way through uni, on top of other studies. Most of these scribbles I'd never dare show to anyone. They're just embarrassing daubs, really. But they were to me what Verdi's "galley slave years" were to him: just as he learned the art of composition by writing two or three operas when he was young, so I learned the basics of characterisation and plot when I was young. ;)

Alas that I never learned much about describing settings or POV or "business" back then! :( But, as my uni's motto so proudly states (and borrows from Michelangelo): Ancora imparo - I am always learning. :)
