All right, let's give this a shot. Just for example ... take this old, old trope: the hero wins the day, the villain is cast down - hooray! :D

To twist it, how about ... the hero wins the day, but the lady-in-distress turns out to have been in love with the villain, and they get away together.

Or: the hero wins the day, hooray - but the villain's power was the only thing that kept the local community together. Now that the villain's gone, they all turn against each other, and destroy any semblance of community. Nice Job Breaking It, Hero! :P

Or: the hero is defeated, yarooh (the opposite of 'hooray'!) :( The villain twirls his moustaches and mwa-ha-ha's for a bit, has a latte and biscuits, and then sits down to do that morning's accounts. :P Hey, some villains want to pay their minions and underlings a decent wage. Some villains have standards, you know. :)

Or: the hero bursts into the villain's apartments, but the villain blows a whistle and two policemen show up. "Come with us, sonny jim." They arrest the hero for breaking-and-entering.

The point is, tropes exist for audiences to recognise and for authors to subvert. How you subvert a trope depends on you. Do it well - either in a funny way or a serious one - and your audience will applaud.

I hope you like my "subversions"! ;)
