Forum Software Upgrade

Postby Peter McLennan » Wed, 11 Nov 2015 3:54 pm

I've been putting off upgrading the forum software for quite a while, since the upgrading would mean that the mini-chat would need to go (because of incompatibility). I've been monitoring the development of several replacements for mini-chat, but they're proving slow to mature.

Recently, mini-chat seems to have fallen into disuse, so I'm tempted to go ahead with the software upgrade. It wouldn't get us any nice new features, but is supposedly more secure.

After the upgrade, I could try to install a replacement chat add-on, but some problems would need to be expected.

If anyone has any objections to losing the chat capability, speak up now!

The chat seems to have fallen into disuse, alas. :( It could be a useful tool, if only we could find a time that would suit everyone who wanted to have a chat.

Decision: it will happen from 8am on Monday 16 Nov 16. Estimated down-time: 90 minutes.

Or you could just loiter in there ... permanently ... until some unsuspecting passer-by pops their head in, and BAM!! You pounce on 'em! LOL

Thanks Paul; I/we might need it. This is a fairly major upgrade, and could break a lot of things. Step #1: create site backup!

Backups are always good :) I am doing a major server upgrade at work tonight, going to be a long one I think.

That was a total disaster. Remnants of the chat software conflicted with the new forum software, so the upgraded forum wouldn't install or run. I've tried to reinstall the old forum from one of the four(!) backups I took (which only took five hours to do). Some things may not work properly (eg, file attachments).

I'll have to do more research before attempting the upgrade again.
