Re: Specificity

Yes! Absolutely right. I'm writing a story set in ancient Greece. The protag has a sword. But it's not just any sword! The blade is leaf-shaped and roughly 25 inches in length; the handle is embossed with a cross-guard. It's not a sword but a xiphos (pron. "zifos"), an Iron Age Greek short...

Re: It'd be funny, if only ...

 I have a question: stwllar trock? I can see "stwllar" is "stellar", but "trock"? What's that? :? Non-sensical run-on sentence fragments rock! :D Here's one: I was sitting in my kitchen with a big bowl of cathair-sweetened cornflakes when suddenly the doorbell meow...

Re: Dialogue & thoughts

Oh, dear... vocatives. Does anyone use vocatives in every sentence? And boring dialogue too? ================ "Do you have the car keys, Diana?" "I thought you had them, James." "No, you do, Diana!" "Oh yes, Jamesie - so I do." "By the way, Di, let's grab...

Re: On the nose?

"On the nose" means exactly what it sounds like... when you write everything - EVERYTHING - into a scene, when you can summarise it. :) Trust your readers. They can figure things out. They're not dummies. :) And speaking of which, I'd better get a move on and finish my latest chapter - and...
