Yes, they will. Surprise should come with an, 'Oh, of course - I should've seen it coming!' and not a, 'What the cheese?' or 'Who is that character?'
I would burn the book, toss it to the chooks, or drop it in the craypot. Even if I did it ...

I'm not sure about only writing what you know - I think writing what you're passionate about, what you'd love to know, the things that create the deep intrigue that ensure research of the driest subject matter becomes fascinating.
