Although I prefer to write in chunks known as scenes, this is a good discussion on why there are chapters, what they do ... which is almost what a scene does, so I like it!

Yes, they will. Surprise should come with an, 'Oh, of course - I should've seen it coming!' and not a, 'What the cheese?' or 'Who is that character?'
I would burn the book, toss it to the chooks, or drop it in the craypot. Even if I did it ...
