Oh, it's definitely there in LotR. Tolkein created a lot other material, I once read the Silmarillion, though I should have probably been in a different head space when I tried because it was a slog. But from a world building perspective, there are few to compare.

Re: Backstory
Working backstory organically into your story is a challenge. In some cases the reader needs to know the backstory in order to make sense of something. I've seen more than a few cases where two characters who know the backstory have a conversation along the lines of "As you know Bob ..." I...
