Working backstory organically into your story is a challenge. In some cases the reader needs to know the backstory in order to make sense of something. I've seen more than a few cases where two characters who know the backstory have a conversation along the lines of "As you know Bob ..." I...

Research

Even if you're writing fiction, you may have to do research to support your story. Like backstory, there is often a temptation to include what you've learned, even if it has no relevance to the story you're telling. How do you get the balance right? DM = Direct Message, so if they've only listed that as a contact then you would need a Twitter account to get in touch.

The details were shared via the #WritingCommunity on Twitter, and they're pretty good at filtering out the spammers.
